2024

Current Works is Kansas City Society for Contemporary Photography’s (KCSCP) annual juried exhibition. This exhibition showcases the immense photographic talent in the midwest region, exhibiting all forms of photographic processes and applications. We look for new and innovative ways artists use modern photographic techniques to express their creativity as well as those who embrace the traditional form of photography. We strive to have highly qualified and knowledgeable art professionals as our jurors. Over the years we’ve had:  Jan Schall, former Sanders Sosland Curator of Modern Art at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; Larry Meeker, philanthropist and art collector; Keith Davis former Curator of the Hallmark Collection and founding curator of the photography department at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City; Philipp Eirich, gallery owner and collector, Cerbera Gallery; Patty Carroll, award winning internationally known photographer, Megan Benitz, exhibitions director, Albrecht Kemper; Deanna Dikeman, award-winning and internationally known photographer; April Watson, current senior curator of photography, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. Each of these jurors brought their extensive knowledge of art, the photographic medium, and their personal thoughts to create excellent exhibitions year after year.

This year we will be showing in Leedy - Voulkos Art Center’s Main Gallery.

2024 Juror, Adam Finkelston

You can read Adam’s extensive CV here.

Adam Finkelston is an artist, educator, and publisher based in Prairie Village, Kansas. He earned his MFA at Lesley University studying with Christopher James. He also holds an MA in Photography from the University of Missouri-Kansas City where he studied with Elijah Gowin, and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute.

In addition to showing his artwork in numerous solo and group exhibitions, Mr. Finkelston has juried and curated exhibitions all over the US including shows at Georgia State University, Leedy-Voulkos Arts Center (Kansas City, MO), Through This Lens Gallery (Durham, NC), Small Engine Gallery (Albuquerque, NM), and many others. Mr. Finkelston’s primary inspiration as a juror is to encourage people to look at art in person. In a digital age where art is increasingly made and viewed in a digital space, Mr. Finkelston appreciates the importance and power of making and viewing physical works of art in a physical space with other people.

Mr. Finkelston has taught visual art at various levels since 2004. Currently, he is a guest lecturer in printmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute where he teaches photographic printmaking. Since 2007, Mr. Finkelston has taught and served as visual arts department coordinator at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, KS, where he also manages and curates the school’s art gallery. He has also taught several workshops in printmaking and alternative processes to students ages 8 to 80.

The Hand Magazine is based in Prairie Village, Kansas and has been in publication since 2013. The Hand is published four times a year in February, May, August, and November. It is owned, published, co-edited, and distributed by Adam Finkelston. James Meara is lead designer and co-editor. The Hand is dedicated to being the world’s premier forum for “alternative” and historic photographic processes and all types of printmaking. We want to encourage inspiration, education, and community for artists using unique, mixed media, experimental, and idiosyncratic “reproduction-based” techniques. We do also print digital art work and art work where the subject matter has been manipulated, directed, or staged by the artist.
