Morgan Ford Willingham: Notions and Impressions
Artists Reception, Saturday, October 29, 5–7 pm
Examining and reflecting upon the mother-child relationship, from the attempts to raise a child and to shape what their future holds, to the ways in which the child forges their own path, these domestic portraits of my daughter and me attest to the selfhood, uncertainty, and parallels that are threaded between us. The images independently and collectively signify the intimate daily circumstances, and the historical and cultural influences that shape us both as individuals and as a familial unit.

Jeff Burk | White Light: New York City: 1980-1982
"In the 1970s and early 1980s, New York City was completely different from the mostly clean and safe environment of today. Crime, drugs, and graffiti were prevalent. Times Square was more tawdry than tourist friendly and some areas were simply dangerous. Rents were cheap and it was a perfect time for young artists to move in.”
Coffee Talk: We heard from the juror. Now let's listen to the artists.
Several of the artists who are in Current Works will briefly discuss their piece in the show and tell us more about themselves and possibly their art practice. All exhibiting artists are invited to speak. After everyone talks there will be a Q&A. So, make note of any questions you may have during the talks.
We hope you will join us. We will try to zoom if possible but no guarantees.

Current Works Exhibition 2021-22
This is our annual juried exhibition and one of the most preeminent shows in Kansas City. Every year we choose a high caliber juror to select and curate the show. They have the responsibility to go through hundreds of submissions to bring it down to a cohesive series of images that formulate in their mind.
In the past we have had several museum curators, such as Jan Schall and Keith Davis from the Nelson Atkins Museum of Modern Art, and Megan Benitz of the Albrecht-Kemper Museum. We had a prolific collector, Larry Meeker. A gallery owner, Philipp Eirich owner of Cerbera Gallery who signed several artists for representation. In addition to prominent nationally and internationally known photographers, Patty Carroll and this year was Deanna Dikeman.
Deanna had an interest challenge to select the 40 out of almost 250 images. This year’s show consists of 40 images by 40 different photographers. It is quite the show too.
Check out a few of the images from the show as well as the Juror’s talk.

Wet Plate Workshop with Steve Wilson
Wet Plate Collodion is a process where an emulsion is poured onto a glass or metal plate and made light sensitive in a bath of silver nitrate. The plate is exposed in camera while still wet. Once exposed it is developed and placed in a fixative that will prevent it from fading and is viewable in light. The result is an ethereal reverse positive image that has a lifespan of hundreds of years.
