Walstrand’s images reflect fear, uncertainty, and the increasing awareness of dangers beyond our control. Foreboding landscapes and portraits of children are placed together to emphasize the subjects’ inherent uncertainty, fragility, and resiliency. Eighteenth century philosopher, Edmund Burke, proposed that, “experiencing otherwise terrifying phenomena from a position of safety can elicit ‘a sort of delightful horror, a sort of tranquility tinged with terror; which as it belongs to self-preservation, is one of the strongest of all passions.’” Burke’s assertions are nearer and truer now as we face impending dangers with seeming tranquility.
